Starting School with a MACS Condition
Starting school is a big step for any child, and for those with a MACS condition, it comes with unique considerations. We’re here to help you navigate this journey with guidance from our MACS community.
Choosing a School
The right school is a personal choice—mainstream, specialist, or one with visual impairment support. Each has its pros and cons, and our forums offer insights from other parents who’ve made this decision.
💡 Tip from a MACS member: “Choose a school that values well-being. Learning Braille, cane skills, and independence early makes a big difference.”
Understanding EHCPs
An Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) ensures your child gets the support they need. It outlines their needs and entitlements, from one-to-one assistance to specialist equipment.
🔹 Key Points:
- You can request an EHCP assessment from your local authority.
- Involve a Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (QTVI) for expert input.
- Schools must provide evidence of past interventions, so raise concerns early.
