Why do people choose to have or not to have genetic testing?
Having a genetic test is a personal decision for the person with the MAC condition, their parents or guardians and family. Please remember that just because a genetic test may be offered it does not mean you have to take up the offer.
Benefits of genetic testing:
- Offers information of any other additional health implications associated with the gene change alongside the MAC conditions and receive intervention or management.
- Gives valuable information for future family planning.
- Provides information for other family members.
- Provide feelings of relief from uncertainty of what caused the condition.
Risks and limitations of genetic testing:
- If the condition is found to be inherited, some parents experience feelings of guilt or blame.
- Genetic tests may identify other health implications associated with the MAC condition that are not expected.
- Even though a genetic test may provide a diagnosis or explanation it may not mean there are any additional interventions or treatments available.
- If a genetic change is not found through genetic testing it may provoke feelings of frustration, uncertainty and anxiety.
Please note genetic information develops over time through advances in knowledge and technology, and regional genetics services may differ in their service to patients.
